In the mid-eighteenth century, the court of Maratha lord Chhatrapati Shahu needs another Peshwa, the likeness a current PM. Disregarding Shripad Rao's self-designation as the Peshwa, Ambaji Pant chooses a youthful Bajirao. To test his profound intelligence and information of weaponry, Shripad challenges Bajirao to part a peacock quill with a bolt. Bajirao succeeds and is given the title of Peshwa. After ten years, his better half Kashibai is visited by her widowed companion Bhanu, whose spouse was blamed for spying and was requested to be executed by Bajirao. She predicts that similarly as she aches for her significant other, Kashibai will long for Bajirao.

While making a trip to Sironja, an emissary from Bundelkhand enters Bajirao's tent and demands his assistance to battle trespassers. She uncovers herself to be Mastani, the girl of the Hindu Rajput ruler Chhatrasal and his Persian Muslim partner Ruhani Bai. Inspired by her abilities as a warrior, Bajirao helps her with his armed force and thrashings the intruders. Chhatrasal is thrilled and demands Bajirao go through Holi with them in Bundelkhand. Mastani and Bajirao begin to look all starry-eyed at each other and he gives her his blade, unconscious it is an image of marriage among the Bundelkhand Rajputs.
